SEAN RAYMOND

ENGLISH, ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOL AND DIRECTOR OF ENROLLMENT |  SEAN@YORK.ORG
Give It a Go
By Kevin Brookhouser, Technology
Australians like to throw around a common four-word bit of advice when facing epic surf, remote deserts, or one of the continent’s countless animals seemingly intent on killing all humans.
“Give it a go.”

This optimistic phrase reveals the courageous and energetic attitude I’ve noticed in every Australian I’ve met in my travels. It also embodies the mindset of our Assistant Head of School, and Director of Enrollment, Sean Raymond. Perhaps he adopted the give-it-a-go philosophy during his formative years in Australia, or maybe it’s tangled in his DNA. Either way, his willingness to try new experiences helped him through his many travels around the world, starting in New Zealand, moving through Australia, into England, and all over the United States. Then again, this mindset likely caused all this globe trotting.

A willingness to try many different opportunities is part of what draws him to the culture at York School, where students are encouraged to pursue a varsity sport as well as a passion for the arts, sciences, and languages.

At Cal Poly’s University Center for Teacher Education, Sean was schooled in the learning-by-doing model, and for two decades, he has explored and pursued active, social learning in a variety of schools (public, charter, and independent) across the United States, from the west coast to the southeast and the northeast. While wishing to carry forward elements of a classical liberal arts education, he also seeks to design and provide innovative pedagogy and curricula by offering York students opportunities for cross-curricular learning, collaboration, cosmopolitanism, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and character.

At York, Mr. Raymond teaches in the English department. He is a co-founder of iLead+Design, an educational partnership that provides real world, authentic learning experiences for students in a studio school model, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Independent Curriculum Group. He lives in Monterey, with his wife Cameron, their daughter, Dylan, and dog, Sydney, all of whom are more than ready to “give it a go.”
No word yet on what the next it is.
