Teaching English is merely a conduit for Jennifer Berry to share her passion for social justice.
She believes in the power of a good story, and she hopes the literature she selects will teach empathy and become a transformative experience for her students. Ms. Berry feels that literature can connect the reader across the earth and through time with another person’s experience, allowing them to share that person’s path, even if only for a short while. Ms. Berry’s goals for her students certainly are embodied in her own personality and behavior in that she is a very caring and kind person.
Ms. Berry has a variety of interests, most of which are related to the outdoors. Her childhood in Georgia included 10 months traveling on a sailboat, perhaps a source of her love of nature and animals, especially manatees and pelicans. She enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, camping and getting out into nature.
Ms. Berry designed her own major at Oberlin College, studying a combination of Literature, Women’s Studies and African-American Studies. She earned her teaching degree through Mills College and her M.A. in English Composition at San Francisco State University. She taught high school English in San Lorenzo, and English Composition at CSUMB, before joining the faculty at York School. She teaches senior English Composition, and sophomore English. She is continually involved in collaborative work, keeping her students’ activities relevant and interesting.
