PAMELA CLEMENS

LATIN, INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DEAN  |  PCLEMENS@YORK.ORG

The Greater Good
By Ellen Masten, College Counseling

Pamela Clemens embodies the true meaning of altruism—the principle or practice of unselfish concern for the welfare of others and the philosophical doctrine that the right action is that which produces the greatest benefit to others.
In all her many roles here at York, whether it be in her Latin classroom, or as the International Student Dean, getting people to understand each other is Pamela’s way of building a more harmonious world through cross-cultural communication, compassion, and empathy.
Pamela believes that it is imperative for York students to understand that no matter what a person does, where they are from, or their unique lot in life, each and every person is important and deserves respect. If students understand that we all have the same hopes and dreams no matter the language we speak or the country we come from, then they are more likely to grow into responsible citizens of the world.
Pamela’s ultimate goal is to help her students connect with people who have lives that are very different than their own—the homeless, the foreign born, the elderly, etc.—and then open their hearts to them. There is no greater joy for Pamela then watching her students’ positive and playful interactions as they start to figure things out on their own while learning a new language or serving others. Teaching allows her to have a very personal relationship with her students and seeing them develop into young adults right before her eyes is truly amazing.
